The search engine can change how the company ranks in its search engine. The companies will have to change their Search Engine Optimization(SEO) to protect their Google ranking.

Google is not changing the user interface as part of the Caffeine update. So the average user is not likely to be surprised by the way results appear. The update does not affect the ranking of ads on the search engine.

“For the last several months, a large team of Googlers has been working on a secret project: a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search, it’s the first step in a process that will let us push the envelope on size, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness and other dimensions,” wrote the company blog.

“Google makes constant changes to its search algorithms and infrastructure, but such a change in this magnitude has not been done since 2006,” said Matt Cutts, Principal Engineer, Google.

The search page is identical to the classic, clean Google web page.

Google is opening a web developer preview to collect the feedback regarding how Caffeine performs compared to its current search engine and is not looking for comparisons to offerings from rival internet firms.

Microsoft has been praising the momentum of its recently-launched Bing search engine and is believed to take long term approach for closing the gap with Google. Google is rolling out a new system for letting Gmail users access their accounts offline. Google will cache your messages on your system using Google Gears. You’ll be able to open your browser to Gmail.com, see your inbox, read and label messages and even write replies without a Net connection. Your messages will send once your system reconnects to the Web.

The system is beta (of course) and accessible through Gmail Labs. But it won’t be immediately available to everyone – Google is parsing out access as it experiments with the new feature. I don’t have access to the new feature yet, so I’ve still got lots of questions. But Google’s post makes it sound like the experience will be almost indistinguishable from using Gmail normally.

“Gmail uses Gears to download a local cache of your mail. As long as you’re connected to the network, that cache is synchronized with Gmail’s servers. When you lose your connection, Gmail automatically switches to offline mode, and uses the data stored on your computer’s hard drive instead of the information sent across the network. You can read messages, star and label them, and do all of the things you’re used to doing while reading your webmail online. Any messages you send while offline will be placed in your outbox and automatically sent the next time Gmail detects a connection,”.

There will also be a “flaky connection mode” that’s supposed to give you the best of both worlds. It’ll assume that you’re disconnected and use the local cache to store your data, but whenever your connection is working, it’ll sync with Google’s servers in the background.

Google’s plan to run native x86 code inside browser windows

Browsers

Technology

Development

Google

The browser’s role is ever increasing. Simple. The Google Native Client is a new set of components that allows Web browsers to download and execute native x86 code. It’s not an emulator, and it’s not a virtual machine. The code runs on the actual processor with access to memory and system resources and negligible loss of performance. It even gives browser-based apps access to modern, accelerated CPU instruction sets, such as SSE.

Visual Studio 2010 – My Review

.Net

Development

Technology

Visual Studio

.Net Framework 4.0

Visual Studio 2010

Visual Studio 2010 Review

vs.net

Hi Guys, Microsoft released Visual Studio 2010 CTP in October. You can download it from here.

After you download you’ll run the .exe file to extract the setup and the setup is of the .vhd format that is Virtual PC hard disk. So you’ll need Virtual PC to run Visual Studio 2010.

But, but, but guys please check out the minimum requirement for this CTP to run. Hard disk space required is 75 GB, yes, its not 7.5 but 75 GB. Well that’s not true you can have this CTP run if you have upto 25 GB on one drive.

When you extract the .exe file the .vhd file extracted is of size 23 GB. Also when you bind the .vhd file to the virtual pc, you need minimum 1GB ram allocated to the Virtual PC disk.

When I ran the Visual Studio for the first time the screen took around 10 mins to load and I just shut down the CTP and got back to work.

The reason for the extracted file to be of 23 GB is because that VHD when you map to Virtual PC will have Visual Studio 2010, Visual Studio 2008, SQL Server 2008, SQL Server 2005 + many more software installed.

When you execute the Virtual PC which is mapped to VHD, Virtual PC will load Windows Server 2008 and it takes lots of burden it killed my laptop. Although I have fair enough configuration. My processor is Core 2 Duo, 1.83 GHZ and with 1 GB ram. Yet it just killed my PC performance.

I even tried to extract the file on an External Hard Disk and Even on my IPod classic. But I was able to extract only first rar file. I googled the reason and found it was because the External Hard Disk is of FAT32 format and they do not support data transfer of more than 4GB. So I had to clean up my Hard Disk and extract 23 GB .vhd file there.

I really did not understood why Microsoft shipped Visual Studio 2010 this way. With 7GB download size and 23 GB extracted file. I was really disappointed with such strategy. Microsoft must have shipped Visual Studio 2010 as a single file. What could be the reason for adopting this process?

Here is my Virtual PC screen shot with Visual Studio 2010

Download and Test Windows7

Technology

Launch

Microsoft

Windows

Windows 7

As anticipated, Microsoft used CES to launch the beta of Windows 7, posting the preview of the company’s next operating system to its developer download services. The beta only supports an upgrade from Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1).

Microsoft declined to get specific about upgrade paths for the final version of Windows 7, or to spell out how many editions it would produce and what it would charge for each. The beta is “roughly equivalent” to the Ultimate version of Vista , it added.

Both 32- and 64-bit versions of the beta will be available for downloading, but only English, German, Japanese, Arabic and Hindi editions will be posted Friday. Other language versions are expected at the product’s launch.

To install the beta, users must have a DVD drive able to burn disk images to a blank disc. The beta, said Microsoft in a follow-up blog it published Wednesday, will be available as an .iso file. It did not spell out the size of the download.

The beta expires on Aug. 1, 2009.

The Windows 7 download will be posted to Microsoft’s site on Friday, Jan. 9.

How to protect yourself from “Conflicker” Worm

Microsoft

Technology

Anti-Virus

Conflicker

Downadup

Kido

Virus

Windows

Worm

Millions of Windows computers have been infected by a new computer worm dubbed “Conficker.” The situation is “not getting better,” but rather is “getting worse,” according to security software vendor F-Secure. And it may also include code or other malware that damages both a computer and network. The worm also goes by the names “Kido” and “Conflicker.” Details on how it operates and how to remove it are here.

Once executed, Downadup disables a number of system services, including Windows Automatic Update, Windows Security Center, Windows Defender, and Windows Error Reporting. The worm then connects to a malicious server, where it downloads additional malware to install on the infected computer. Computerworld provides a more detailed report on Downadup’s potential dangers.

Since Downadup uses random extension names to avoid detection, Windows users should make sure their security software is set to scan all files, rather than checking on specific extensions, F-Secure recommends.

The alarmingly high number of Downadup infections led Microsoft last Tuesday to enable its anti-malware utility, Microsoft Software Removal Tool (MSRT), to detect the worm. So it’s important that Windows users, if they haven’t already, download the latest Microsoft security patch that went out earlier this week.

Add drop down list to Excel

Microsoft

Technology

data entry

drop down list

excel sheet

highlight

Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Office

office applications

In Access, you can limit user entries by forcing users to choose a value from a list control. Office applications use the same functionality in built-in drop-down lists. For instance, the Highlight and Font Color controls on most Formatting toolbars use this flexible tool. Simply click the small triangle to the right of the icon to display a list of choices.

You can create the same type of control for your users in an Excel sheet, but the process isn’t intuitive. The option is in the Data Validation feature. Fortunately, once you know the feature exists, it’s easy to implement. You need only two things: a list and a data entry cell. The following sheet shows a simple drop-down list in an Excel sheet.

Users click the drop-down arrow to display a list of items from A1:A4. If a user tries to enter something that isn’t in the list, Excel rejects the entry. To add this drop-down list to a sheet, do the following:

Create the list in cells A1:A4. Similarly, you can enter the items in a single row, such as A1:D4.

Select cell E3. (You can position the drop-down list in most any cell or even multiple cells.)

Choose Validation from the Data menu.

Choose List from the Allow option’s drop-down list. (See, they’re everywhere.)

Click the Source control and drag to highlight the cells A1:A4. Alternately, simply enter the reference (=$A$1:$A$4).

Make sure the In-Cell Dropdown option is checked. If you uncheck this option, Excel still forces users to enter only list values (A1:A4), but it won’t present a drop-down list.

Click OK.

You can add the drop-down list to multiple cells. Select the range of data input cells (step 2) instead of a single cell. It even works for noncontiguous cells. Hold down the Shift key while you click the appropriate cells.

It’s worth noting that the drop-down arrow is visible only when the cell is active.

Zipping in asp.net

.Net

ASP.Net

Tip of Week

Visual Studio

Technology

vs.net

Zipping was never so easy in .Net. DotNetZip supports these scenarios:
- an ASP.NET app that dynamically creates ZIP files and allows a browser to download them
- a Windows Service that periodically zips up a directory for backup and archival purposes
- a WPF program that modifyies an existing archive – renaming entries, removing entries from an archive, or adding new entries to an archive
- a Windows Forms app that creates AES-encrypted zip archives for privacy of archived content.
- An administrative script in PowerShell or VBScript that performs backup and archival.
- a WCF service that receives a zip file as an attachment, and dynamically unpacks the zip to a stream for analysis
- creating zip files from stream content, saving to a stream, extracting to a stream, reading from a stream
- creation of self-extracting archives.

Njoy coding

Parser Error Message: Could not load type

.Net

ASP.Net

Visual Studio

bin directory

could not load type

Error

error message

global assembly

page directive

Parser Error Message

source error

Technology

using visual studio

vs.net

web application

Source Error: Line 1: <%@ Application Codebehind=”Global.asax.cs” Inherits=”Global’” %> This error occurs when you create a new web application in asp.net using visual studio.net and without compiling the application, you try to browse a page in the application.
